From Cars to Football
Young people in Leytonstone are constantly telling your ward councillors that there is not enough for them to do. In particular there is no free and readily available kick about and sports facilities, for use after school and at weekends.
In response your 3 ward councillors have been looking to identify potential sites in Leytonstone which could accommodate such facilities. We have concluded that the best site would be in the Church Lane Car Park, by reducing the number of parking spaces. We have already approached council officers, to begin a discussion on our thoughts.
Cllr Marie Pye said- ‘Ideally we’re looking for a MUGA- (muti- use games area) to be built. This could be marked out for 5-a-side football and basketball and could easily be accommodated on part of the car park.’
Up Your Street
Your 3 ward councillors have been doing ‘Street Audits’ of roads and streets in Leytonstone. We are looking at basic maintenance issues such as- pot holes, pavements, tree bases and lamp post columns-, along with enforcement matters including- ‘To Let’ signs and fly- tipping- and general appearance issues eg standard of street cleaning, graffiti and fly posting. After each audit we will write to residents in the street or include information in our regular newsletter to let you know what we have done and what action is proposed and when.
So far we have undertaken audits in a whole range of roads including Corbicum, Kingswood, Fairlop, Drayton, Connaught, Scarborough, Colworth, Kings, Queens and Esther. For example in the Colworth/ Corbicum area, we have reported problems with street sweeping, 16 tree bases, 8 lamp post columns, 10 problems with graffiti, 20 instances of rubbish dumped in front gardens, a significant number of over due ‘To Let’ signs, a post box and surprisingly just the 1 pothole!
Clyde commented- ‘Whilst doing the audits we have also been talking to residents of the particular streets and roads, who have really welcomed this initiative and demonstration of our commitment to Leytonstone and its residents. We will be up your street soon!”
